The competition changed name from the ‘Coca Cola Cup’ to the ‘Worthington Cup.’ The 1999 final was between Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs won the tie 1-0 as their Danish midfielder, Alan Nielsen scored the winner in the 90th minute as Spurs triumphed.
Leicester were in the final once again in the following season, in what was their third final in four years. They were up against second division club, Tranmere Rovers, a match which they won 2-1 to win them the league cup.
A second division side reached the final once again the following year, as Liverpool met Birmingham. The match was tied at 1-1 after extra time and the game was forced to penalties. Andy Johnston of Birmingham missed his crucial penalty and Liverpool were the league cup winners of 2001.
Blackburn appeared in the 2002 cup final, their opponents were the 1999 winners, Tottenham; Andy Cole scored the winning goal of the match as Blackburn won 2-1.
