Kingsley Black

Kingsley Black bursted into the news headlines as an overnight phenomenon after his magnificent display which inspired Luton Town to victory in a thrilling3-2 League Cup final win (Littlewoods Cup) over Arsenal. It was Luton’s fist major honour in their history in football. Black made his league debut for Luton on 26th September 1987, in a 2-0 defeat by QPR. In the 1988-89 season, Black was given the number 11 shirt for Luton in a fine season which he scored eight goals as Luton reached the league cup final once again. Black had the ability to drift past defenders with relative comfort. His tight dribbling skills were complemented by his neat passing and pin point crossing. After four seasons at Luton, Kingsley Black moved over to Nottingham to play for Nottingham Forest. Black also made many international appearances for Northern Ireland.

 

Neil Webb
League Cup Status – Winner (Nottingham Forest) 1989
In June 1985, Neil Webb moved from Portsmouth to Nottingham Forest for £250,000. Under the assured guidance of Brian Clough, Webb improved into one of the best midfielders in Britain. In the 1989 League Cup final (Littlewoods Cup final), Webb orchestrated a majestic Forest Victory, firing Clough’s tam into the lead with a powerful half volley in the second half. Alex Ferguson invested £1.5 million for Webb in 1989. Webb was an integral part of the Manchester United set up as he won the FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup. Neil Webb has also been a key player for England as he started in for England in the 1988 and 1992 European Championships.

Roy Wegerle
League Cup Status – Runner up (Luton Town) 1989
Luton boss, Ray Harford, bought Wegerle for a bargain £75,000 from Chelsea in 1988 and he was a crucial part of the Luton set up as he scored in both of the semi final legs of the league cup against West ham as Luton booked a place in the final. Wegerle scored 10 goals in 45 appearances for Luton and then moved for £ 1 million to Queens Park rangers, resulting in a huge profit made by Luton. Wegerle was top goal scorer for QPR during the 1990-91 season.
