The final of the 1983 league cup was a thriller, after only twelve minutes, United’s Gordon McQueen played a long ball from inside his own half to the edge of the Liverpool penalty area. Norman Whiteside chested the ball well and drove the ball just inside Bruce Grobbelaar’s left hand post for a breathtaking goal. Manchester united started creating more chances however the scoreline remained 1-0 by half time. The second half was played at a much higher tempo and with 15 minutes remaining, Craig Johnston squared the ball to Sammy lee, who played the ball to Alan Kennedy on the left. Kennedy played the ball forward and, from well outside the area, he shot the ball hard towards the far corner to equalize.
Liverpool substitute David Fairclough came on for Craig Johnston and began to take control in extra time. Ronnie Whelan scored a vital stunning goal in extra time and Liverpool were the winners of the ‘Milk Cup.’ |
