Aston Villa reached the league cup final for the third time in 1971, however Tottenham ran out comfortable winners 2-0. The following year produced an amazing final between Stoke and Chelsea, Stoke won the tie however the hero of the day was Gordon Banks as he made a string of legendary saves which in turn won them the trophy. The following year, Tottenham became the first club to win the trophy twice as Spurs disposed Norwich City 1-0 in the final.
The 1974 League cup final saw Wolves narrowly beating Manchester city 2-1 in the final as they won their first league cup. The following final saw two second division sides battle it out for the trophy, Aston Villa beat Norwich 1-0 and both sides were also promoted to the top flight the following season.
Manchester City met Newcastle in the 1976 League Cup final and comfortably beat them to win it. The 1977 league cup final went to three replays, in a match between Aston Villa and Everton, Villa eventually ran out winners.
The final went to a replay once again the following year as Liverpool lost to Nottingham forest 1-0, in a match which future England goalkeeper, Chris Woods, would make his debut. Brian Clough took Forest to the final once again the following years as this time they beat 1976 FA Cup winners, Southampton 3-2. Forest continued to dominate the league cup and the following year they once again reached the final, this time losing out to Wolves 1-0.
