Stoke City 2-1 Chelsea
Date Played – 4th March 1972
The final kicked off on a grey afternoon at Wembley. From kick off, Chelsea’s John Hollins and Chris Garland took control of midfield, and it came as a surprise when Stoke snatched the lead in the fourth minute. Obstructed by his own defenders, Peter Bonetti only half cleared a throw in from Dobing and terry Conroy gleefully headed home the rebound after Smith had his shot blocked. On the stroke of half time, Chelsea scored their equalizer. Cooke’s teasing free kick was headed on by Webb and Osgood scooped the ball past Gordon banks while lying flat on the floor. Chelsea continued to outplay Stoke in the second half; however their attacks constantly broke up on the rock of Gordon Banks. Stoke scored their second of the match through Eastham in the 73rd minute and they had to hang on to victory.
In the dying minutes of the match, Peter Osgood had a flying header spectacularly saved by Gordon Banks.
