Aston Villa and second division club Rotherham starred in the fist ever league cup final. Villa won the first leg 3-0 however Rotherham did win the return leg 2-0 which ultimately was not enough to win it. Forth division Rochdale reached the final the following year and they put on a brave front losing 4-0 on aggregate to Norwich City. Birmingham City met their local rivals, Aston Villa in the 1963 league cup final. Birmingham beat Villa comfortably and was the winners of the 1963 League Cup. The 1964 league cup final witnessed Stoke City up against Leicester City, after a 1-1 draw in the first leg; Leicester won the second leg 3-2 and was champions of the league cup. Leicester were looking to defend their trophy the following year as they met Chelsea in the final, Chelsea ran out 3-2 winners. The 1966 League cup had a changed format as the winners had a super prize of entering European competition. West Bromwich Albion disposed an all star West ham team in the final. The 1967 league cup final was highly exciting as QPR beat defending champions, West Brom, 3-2, with Rodney marsh putting on an inspired performance. Leeds won their first major trophy in 1968, led under by their manager Don Revie as they narrowly beat Arsenal 1-0.
Arsenal were back in the final the following year, this time up against third division outfit Swindon, to everyone’s surprise Swindon comfortably won the final 3-1, to this day remaining one of the biggest shocks ever in football history.
West Brom made a record breaking third appearance in the final as they lost to a mighty Manchester city side in the final.
